Lighting For Gardens would like to congratulate one of our closest and long-standing Lighting Designers, Mike Shackleton and his company, Ornamental Garden Lighting, for being an integral part of the winning team for the 2019 BALI Award for ‘Domestic Landscaping over £250K’. The BALI Awards are the largest landscaping awards in Europe and are in its 43rd year. The 2019 awards had 14 main categories and a record number of entries.
The winning project titled ’New House Build, Esher’ saw Ornamental Gardens Lighting’s design bring to life the picturesque garden created by Garden Designer Selina Botham and landscape contractors LDC Landscapes. The 18-month project fully redesigned and landscaped the main gardens at the front, as well as the hillside garden at the back, allowing wonderful views from the house, where Mike’s expert lighting scheme helps brings subtle and enhancing life to the whole garden at night. With an outdoor kitchen, feature sculptures, low level planting, multiple steps, trees and an ornate gazebo, Ornamental Garden Lighting have created a design that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing.
‘Being part of the landscaping team on this prestigious project required close co-operation and communication between the garden designer, all the on-site contractors, the clients themselves and the manufacturers of the architectural and garden lighting we selected. Timing was essential, in both supplying power around the garden and the choice and installation of lighting, so to end up with not only a delighted client but a BALI Award is a wonderful conclusion’.
Mike Shackleton, Senior Lighting Designer, Ornamental Garden Lighting.

Michael Shackleton, OGL’s senior lighting designer, came to garden and architectural lighting from a background of 35 years in film production as a Director of Photography and later as a Director. Michael formed Ornamental Garden Lighting as a direct result of the owners of featured locations asking to have the same dramatic cinematic lighting effects recreated for their homes and gardens, so they could enjoy the result on a daily basis.
